As a matter of fact, downtown Victoria has some very nice architecture. The parliament buildings are just around the corner from the Empress Hotel, and they are beautiful. There are also some much newer buildings around the downtown/harbour area, but they have done an excellent job of blending the old with the new.
You may also be interested to learn that the Empress Hotel is one of a chain of hotels that was built across Canada by Canadian Pacific. These hotels (such as the Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City and the Royal York Hotel in Toronto) share similar architecture and sumptuous decor with the Empress. All were built to offer high-end accommodations to the people travelling along the (then-)new cross-Canada railway.

That is a very nice looking building. Was there a lot of other nice sites out there?
