Horrible

A 34-year-old man, a husband and father of two small children died in jail this past week. He had suffered terribly from cancer and a broken back for months, but was denied medical treatment and diagnosis until days before the end. (Apparently his captors felt he was "faking it", even though he'd been emaciated and shrunken by his disease and unable to walk or stand.) He was in jail because he'd overstayed a visa years before. Before he died, his family was finally able to visit him, but only under armed guard.

Where was this? Cambodia? North Korea? Columbia? Some other shithole country? Nope, the U.S.A.

I hope every single sadistic son of a bitch involved in this tragic story loses his job and faces serious jail time of his own. It still won't be enough.

Sadly stories like this no longer surprise me.

Look up gender-neutral pronouns some time.

So typical of you Cindy, you must think there are no females involved. You are as naive as you are lazy at work. Speaking of work.. you'd better add a count down timer for when YOU leave office, just like the one you have for George Bush! Only you'll be out before him!

Hey Anonymous,

You're right about the gender-neutral language. I was in a hurry when I wrote it and just didn't make the time to do the proper word-smithing. Generally I'm pretty conscientious about using gender-neutral language. I truly did not believe that only men would necessarily be involved in this case, and due to time constraints hoped that my readers would understand it wasn't meant to be gender-specific.

As for your other points, thanks, I guess, for your perspective. Time will tell.

I guess the only question I have at this point is why, if you dislike me so intensely, you would even visit this blog? Why would you waste your time and your energy feeding your hate?

Reading this comment and others like it, apparently you don't have much time for the people of the good old USA. In all the blogs I have read, I have never read a bad comment on a Canadian. You must have a lot of time on your hands to sit and figure out things to criticize us about. Are you THAT perfect? Call us (basically) uneducated? I think maybe you should read your own newspapers, check your own government officials, and then we'll see if you are so much better

No doubt Sandy, I got a friend from one of those "shithole" countries that'd love to meet this Eclecta.

Hi Sandy and Josh,

Please do not misunderstand. I would not expect such tragic situations in either the U.S. or Canada because they are such great countries. So my rant yesterday - and it was a rant - was an expression of disappointment that something like this could happen in a developed country like the U.S. Sometimes terrible things like this happen in Canada too, and I think we should be speaking up about them and holding our public institutions to a standard of professional and compassionate behaviour. Don't you?

If the political focus of this blog pays more attention to America, it's not because I think it is so much worse than Canada; I just happened to grow up near the American border, and watched American news more than Canadian news, and feel more familiar with it than the politics and events of Canada. Sad, but true.
